What crosses your mind when you hear the words “eco-friendly hotel or eco tourism”? Did you ever think that you could reduce your negative impact in our world by choosing sustainable hotels? Do things like solar panels, water reusing system, dim lights to protect turtles, sustainable gastronomy based on local produce availability, organic orchards, vegan food options, 30 acres of forest to compensate CO2 emissions, energetic labyrinth designed with sacred geometry, nontoxic bath and cleaning products, organic spa, and collaborations with local artists and chefs cross your mind? Yes, this is exactly what a conscious lifestyle is all about! Adventurous, fun, beautiful, sexy, spiritual, and you get to experience it all in Costa Rica’s Cala Luna Hotel!

This eco-friendly paradise is located in a protected natural reserve in Tamarindo and was designed to support all the species and life around it. Besides using solar energy to heat water and offering vegan options and biodynamic wines in their menu, they also have practices to ensure the safety of Baula turtles and their nesting areas on the beach, and also the family of lovely raccoons living in the hotel’s garden that come and say hi from time to time. As if all this weren’t magnificent enough, they also have a 30 acre property nearby where they host farm-to-table dinners with ingredients harvested from their organic orchards, and meditations in a labyrinth that was designed with sacred geometry in mind taking into consideration the two energy columns and energy vortex discovered in the property. Sacred geometry, in case you haven’t heard of it, is something you can find in nature, architecture, mandalas, the universe, patterns. It is the direct connection between us and a higher power, and Cala Luna and La Senda have the largest labyrinth in the world with 3 acres of cacti planted on this energetic field following a sacred geometric shape. The field has two energetic columns- positive and negative. Female and male. Ying and yang. To solve this polar duality, the labyrinth was constructed with two circles that touch and connect at the center representing a womb, and the area where all energies become one. The cacti are believed to repel negative energy and intensify the positive!

This magical place is the soul of Cala Luna’s aim to raise consciousness, and their organic orchards and farm-to-table dinners are the fuel!

To get to La Senda (location of the labyrinth and farm-to-table dinner) you have to take a short shuttle ride coordinated by the hotel. This place is a must if you are staying at Cala Luna.

Another activity I enjoyed tremendously at the hotel was the “natural jacuzzi”….in lava rock formations....in the middle of the ocean.....while the tides are low. The ocean’s water sits in big wholes with tiny colorful fishes and other sea creatures, giving life to transparent natural pools, until the ocean tides rise again and cover all the rock formations transforming them into a sacred area you can snorkel. All in a matter of a few hours! It was a beautiful experience. The magical power of nature!

Cala Luna also has bikes you can use at no charge to ride to town for a beer, coffee, meal or some shopping. And, a spa offering holistic treatments with nontoxic and organic products!

Things to know about the hotel:

-Cala Luna is located 4-5hrs from San Jose Airport. You can arrange your transport with the hotel.

-They offer delicious vegan options in their menu, and also during the farm-to-table dinner. Ask in advance.

-Arrange your tour of the labyrinth and farm-to-table dinner in advance.

-Their rooms, constructions and interior design was focused on sourcing the materials and décor locally and using as many sustainable supplies as possible.

-They make their own sustainable and biodegradable straws from nature! Carrizo grass, to be exact. No chemicals no plastic no petroleum used in the process of making them. They simply boil the grass and dry it and give life to beautiful nature-friendly straws!

-They also feature art pieces of Latin American artists

-Take a surf lesson! You will enjoy it fully. I know I did!

-Take their morning yoga classes and core training. The setting is gorgeous! You’ll be completely surrounded by nature.

Other things to know:

-Please use ocean-safe and nontoxic sunblock when going in the water. Whatever you put on your body and hair prior to going for a dive or swim in the ocean will float on our waters and cover the skin and pores of fishes, sea creatures and corals. Creating a coat that slowly suffocates or poisons them. Especially products with Oxybenzone. That ingredient is in almost every non-natural product and is toxic to corals. Always choose natural and ocean-friendly, please!. Some of my favorite “green” sunblock brands are:

Qué cruza por tu mente cuando escuchas las palabras "hotel ecológico o eco-turismo"? Alguna vez pensaste que podrías reducir tu impacto negativo en nuestro mundo al elegir hoteles sostenibles? Lugares que florecen con paneles solares, sistemas de reutilización de agua, luces tenues para proteger las tortugas, gastronomía sostenible basada en la disponibilidad de productos locales, huertos orgánicos, opciones de comida vegetariana, 30 acres de bosque para compensar las emisiones de CO2, laberinto energético diseñado con geometría sagrada, productos de baño naturales, spa orgánico y colaboraciones con artistas locales y chefs? Sí, esto es exactamente de lo que se trata un estilo de vida consciente! Aventurero, divertido, hermoso, sexy, espiritual. Algo que puedes experimentar completemanete en el Hotel Cala Luna de Costa Rica!  Este paraíso ecológico se encuentra en una reserva natural protegida en Tamarindo y fue diseñado para apoyar a todas las especies y la vida a su alrededor. Además de usar energía solar para calentar agua y ofrecer opciones veganas y vinos biodinámicos en su menú, también tienen prácticas para garantizar la seguridad de las tortugas Baula y sus nidos en la playa, y también la familia de mapaches divinos que viven en el jardín del hotel y vienen a saludar de vez en cuando. Como si todo esto no fuera lo suficientemente magnífico, también tienen una propiedad de 23 hectáreas donde ofrecen cenas farm-to-table con ingredientes cosechados de sus huertos orgánicos, y meditaciones en un laberinto que fue diseñado con geometría sagrada teniendo en cuenta dos columnas de energía y un vórtice energético descubierto en la propiedad. La geometría sagrada, en caso de que no la hayas escuchado, es algo que puedes encontrar en la naturaleza, la arquitectura, los mandalas, el universo, los patrones. Es la conexión directa entre nosotros y un poder superior. Y, Cala Luna y La Senda construyó el mayor laberinto del mundo con 1.1 hectáreas de cactus plantados en este campo energético siguiendo una forma geométrica sagrada. El campo tiene dos columnas energéticas, positiva y negativa. Femenino y masculino. Ying y Yang. Para resolver esta dualidad polar, el laberinto fue construido con dos círculos que se tocan y conectan en el centro representando un útero, y el área donde todas las energías se vuelven una. Este lugar mágico es el alma de la misión de Cala Luna de crear conciencia, y sus huertos orgánicos y cenas farm-to-table son el combustible! Para llegar a La Senda (ubicación de la laberinto y de las cenas farm-to-table), tienes que tomar el transporte coordinado por el hotel.

Otra actividad que disfruté tremendamente en el hotel fue el "jacuzzi natural" ... en las formaciones rocosas de lava ... en el medio del océano ... mientras las mareas están bajas. La marea baja hace que agua del océano se retenga y estanque en agujeros donde pequeños peces de colores y otras criaturas marinas nadan, dando vida a piscinas naturales transparentes, hasta que las mareas oceánicas se eleven de nuevo y cubran todas las formaciones rocosas, transformándolas en un área sagrada donde se puede bucear. Todo en cuestión de unas pocas horas! Una experiencia hermosa y prueba del poder mágico de la naturaleza! 

Cala Luna también tiene bicicletas que puedes usar gratuitamente para ir a la ciudad a tomar una cerveza, un café, comer o ir de compras. Y un spa que ofrece tratamientos holísticos con productos no tóxicos y orgánicos!

Cosas que debes saber sobre el hotel: 

-Cala Luna se encuentra a 4-5 horas del aeropuerto de San José. Puedes organizar tu transporte con el hotel.  -Ofrecen deliciosas opciones veganas en su menú, y también durante las cenas farm-to-table. Hazles saber por adelantado.

-Las habitaciones, construcciones y diseño de interiores fueron enfocados en el abastecimiento de materiales  sostenibles y decoración a nivel local.

-Hacen sus propias pajitas/sorbetes/bombillas biodegradables y sostenibles de la naturaleza! De carrizo, para ser exactos. Sin productos químicos, ni plástico, ni petróleo. Simplemente hierven la hierba y la secan y dan vida a hermosas pajitas amigables con la naturaleza! 

-Toma una clase de surf! Lo disfrutarás a full. Yo amé la mia!

-Toma las clases matutinas de yoga y entrenamiento. El escenario es precioso! Estarás completamente rodeado de naturaleza.  

Otras cosas para saber:

-Por favor, usa bloqueador solar natural y no tóxico cuando vayas al agua. Lo que sea que pongas en tu cuerpo y cabello antes de ir a bucear o nadar en el océano flotará en nuestras aguas y cubrirá la piel y los poros de peces, criaturas marinas y corales. Creando una capa que los sofoca o envenena lentamente. Especialmente productos con Oxybenzone. Ese ingrediente se encuentra en casi todos los productos de belleza no naturales y es tóxico para los corales.
